It’s Friday Night so it’s SmackDown tonight! We’re at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, for your live August 21^st SmackDown report. Tonight, the Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk will put the title on the line against Kevin Owens in a highly personal showdown in KO’s home country. Tama Tonga & Talla Tonga, backed by the dangerous Haku, defend the WWE Tag Team Championship against the former champs Damian Priest & R-Truth. And Blake Monroe is set to battle Giulia in her first SmackDown match. Also, after The American Nightmare and The Viper went brawling all over the arena last week at the end of SmackDown, will Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton unleash more chaos en route to Sunday Night’s Main Event?

This is the live report for Friday Night SmackDown on August 21^st.

Nearly 18,000 have gathered in Toronto tonight as we get the superstars walk-ins. Joe Tessitore and Wade Barrett are our commentators. Mark Nash is the ring announcer, and Kathy Kelley does the interviews.

First we’re shown a video package of what’s happened between Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton.

Backstage, we get SmackDown GM Nick Aldis with Sami Zayn yelling at him about last week’s injustice. Orton comes up behind him. Next, we see on the TV screens Rhodes live in the arena calling out Orton. Aldis shows up and says we’re not doing this now. Orton’s music starts as he walks out. He says they already got a time and a place for this. Rhodes says he knows him well enough to do this right now.

Aldis intervenes saying he’s sick of them being obsessed with each other. He states if either of them lay a finger on each other again until Sunday Night’s Main Event, that person will never get another title shot. Orton says he agrees. He says Rhodes said about finishing where they left off last week. Rhodes can’t finish him off. But Orton can. Hee can do what it takes, but Rhodes can’t.

Rhodes tells Orton he’s operating under a dangerous assumption. Rhodes asked is he sure he’s still the good guy and can’t finish off Orton? Maybe Ortn can become the 15^th champion. But he still comes back to him. That’s not a prediction, that’s a spoiler.

After a backstage promo from the MFTs, Damian Priest and R-Truth come out for their title match. After a commercial break, the MFTs are accompanied by the legendary Haku.

WWE Tag Team Championship – The MFTs (c) (w/ Haku) vs. Damian Priest & R-Truth:

We’re first shown last week when the MFTs won the Tag Team Titles.

Right off the bell the MFTs try to immediately take over. Priest gets control and tags in Truth as they double-team Tama as they keep Talla out of the equation. Truth sends Tama back into the ring, but Tama gets back control.

The MFTs isolate Truth for a while. Truth finally dodges Talla and gets the hot tag to Priest. Priest in control now. He tries for a Chokeslam, but Tama takes over with a Clothesline. After some double-team, Priest gets the hot tag to R-truth as he does the 5 moves of Doom on Tama. Talla breaks up the pin as they take out Priest on the outside. The MFTs take over again and hit the Red Cross on Truth for the win.

WINNERS: The MFTs

After the match, Priest pulls up Truth.

Now backstage, Kelley is with CM Punk. She asks, since he’s in hostile territory in Canada, does it change his gameplan. Punk says not at all. He thrives in hostile territories. He says KO has been fighting these imaginary ghosts for twenty years. Punk says he has changed. In walks Orton. He tells Punk after he whoops Rhodes, he’s coming for Punk. Punk said he’s looking forward to it.

After the break, we’re shown last Friday when Aldis tried to make Chelsea Green relinquish the Interim WWE Women’s Championship. He gives Green 30 days to get cleared.

Now backstage, Green meets Tiffany Stratton who comes out. She tried to hug her but Stratton is still in pain with her ribs. She can make up for everything. Stratton says don’t come out tonight and jeopardize herself. Paige comes up and tells her she understands what it’s like to have an injury take everything away. They bump into Fatal Influence. They banter back and forth.

Afterwards, we’re shown Blake Monroe being interviewed by Kelley. She’s asked if this is the debut she envisioned. Monroe says no. She says her debut should’ve been for the Women’s Championship. But no, she has to go against her old friend Giulia. SHe asks Keley what she should wear as she goes through a bunch of clothes. Kelley says that whatever she chooses to wear she’ll look great in. Monroe says she’s right. She’ll make everyone talk about her as she leaves. Time for a break.

We’re back as Giulia makes her way out to the ring. But Monroe jumps her from behind down the ramp. She’s kicking and pounding on Giulia, then sends her to the steel steps. She sends Giulia into the ring but gives her knee shots to the head as Giulia is down now. The match never happens.

Backstage, Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss are talking. Flair says she’s so excited about Bliss’s belated birthday brunch. Bliss talks about having bloody mary’s when Tatum Paxley jumps in. She asks who Mary is and who’s blood do they bring. In walks Jade Cargill with The Baddies. Cargill talks about the freak show Paxley. Michin says next week she’ll take on Paxley one-on-one.

Next, we see Trick Williams walking down with Lil Yachty. They come out to the ring for a promo. We’re shown last Friday when Baron Corbin won his match, but Williams got some revenge on Corbin.

Williams says he’s got his dog Lil Yachty back. But not his title. Since Corbin his backstage walking like a q-ball, come out to the ring so he can get his title back.

Corbin comes out on his motorcycle. Once in the ring with a mic Corbin chases off Yachty. Williams tells Corbin he’s the one he wants. Stop dodging him and give the people want they want. He asks for a match right here and now. Corbin says his title is getting a haircut. He says they had a title shot and a rematch and both times he lost. It’s not happening.

Lil Yachty from behind hits Corbin with the kendo stick and Willians Clotheslines Corbin to the outside. He tries to get back in the ring but gets another hit with the kendo stick. Corbin says at SNME. But first he wants five minutes with Yachty. If he lasts five minutes with Corbin, Williams gets his title shot.  Yachty yells he’s on. Corbin says it’s gonna be the longest five minutes of his life.

Backstage again Kelley asks KO how poetic that after we never thought we’d see him again he gets a WWE Championship title shot in his home country tonight. Finn Balor walks up. Balor says he wanted a little heads up would’ve been nice. In comes GUNTHER. He says to let him takes some pressure off him. He doesn’t have to worry about Balor. He has to worry about him.

Balor says not to worry about him, but as his friend, worry about tonight and winning the WWE Championship. He’ll be waiting for him.

Now, on her way to the ring, is Tiffany Stratton with her injured ribs.

After a break, the Irresistible Forces come out, Lash Legend is Stratton’s opponent. We’re shown last week when Stratton is injured before her Women’s US Title defense and loss to Fatal Influence.

Tiffany Stratton vs Lash Legend:

Stratton immediately goes for a Dropkick on Legend’s knee and head. But Legend’s power takes over. Bear Hug by Legend who slams her into the turnbuckles. Stratton gets out and manages to go for the knees again. Then Stratton hits a backstabber and Legend falls to the outside of the ring. Stratton goes for a Suicide Dive but Legend grabs her and sends her to the ring post.

Legend back in control in the ring. Stratton tried to come back with a Swanton Bomb but missed. Legend hits the Lash Extension for the win.

WINNER: Lash Legend

After the match, Stratton Is attacked by Legend and Jax. Leg drop by Jax and another Bear Hug by Legend. Out comes Green with a Kendo Stick and clears the ring.

Next, we’re given a video package featuring KO’s return and Punk. KO talks about their 20-year history. He calls Punk a phony and he doesn’t respect him. Punk says he sees someone who avoids the work and wasted potential and is a bum. He’s glad he’s not like him.

After the break, we get one more cryptic vignette by Shinsuke Nakamura. His partner is introduced as Kyoki. He looks a lot like Hiromu Takahashi. Likely a name change.

It’s main event time! KO comes out first and is fired up that it’s taken him 20 years to get to Punk. Next, Punk comes out in a hockey mask to a mixed live reaction. People are actually signing his song.

Undisputed WWE Championship – CM Punk vs Kevin Owens:

We get the formal introductions. Punk gets booed heavily in enemy territory.

Right off the bell KO goes right after Punk viciously and sends him to the outside. Hard chops by KO as he now clears the announce desk. Punk throws KO back in the ring and rearranges the desk back again for Tessitore. He goes back into the ring but gets knocked to the mat. KO looks for a Stunner but Punk reverses into a Neckbreaker.

 The match goes back and forth until KO again becomes angry and tons of offense. Cannonball in the corner by KO for a near fall. KO goes up but Punk rolls to the outside. KO blasts Punk with a kick as Punk lands on the announce desk. KO up onto the barrier and Splashed Punk as the desk collapses. KO up top with a Swanton Bomb, but only a close call.

KO delays retaliating and now it’s time for Punk to take control. He goes up top for an Elbow Drop on KO but only a close call. Immediately goes for the Anaconda Vice, but KO gets out. Now Punk is plummeting KO. Here comes the GTS. KO catches the leg and puts Punk in the Sharpshopoter ala Bret Hart! But Punk gets to the ropes. And now the ref takes two bumps and goes out of the ring.

KO gets the Stunner but no ref in sight. GTS on KO by Punk but again no ref. Suddenly, Zayn appears and slams Punk into the ring post. Another Stunner on Punk as Zayn throws the ref in the ring. 1… 2 … NO! Kickout. Zayn grabs the title and slides it to KO. KO takes the title, but he can’t do it. So Zayn clocked KO with the title. Punk hits the GTS on KO and the three count. Punk successfully retains.

WINNER: CM Punk

After Punk celebrates for a few minutes, Zayn comes into the ring and clobbers Punk with the title. Then KO gets up so Zayn clunks KO with the title again. Then Punk gets nailed again with it. He yells at Punk that he stole the title from him as the credits roll.
