The 74-year-old legendary commentator of professional wrestling, Jim Ross, is considered one of the greatest over his nearly 50 years of doing play-by-play for countless matches. He has broadcasted his voice across Mid-South, WCW, and WWE. JR was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2007 by his longtime friend “Stone Cold” Steve Austin for his legendary work. Then, over the past seven years he has been on the AEW team and continues to broadcast commentary mostly for pay-per-views and main events.
But “Good Ol’ JR” has had his share of health issues, infamously dealing with a decades-long battle with Bell’s Palsy. Recently he has had several surgeries for skin cancer, a cancerous mass in his hip, a severely fractured wrist after a fall, as well as colon cancer. Then, this year, suffering a fall both before (throwing out his back at home) and after (passing out at his home) the “AEW Double or Nothing 2026” pay-per-view on Sunday, May 24th, 2026, which caused a nearly 40-day emergency hospital stay.
But if you think the worst is over? Well, think again. After a brief absence, “The Voice of Pro Wrestling” Jim Ross came back on his “Grilling JR” Podcast on July 9th, 2026. Before going into other issues in pro wrestling, he revealed that he is getting ready for brain surgery.
On his “X” account, he tweeted the podcast’s highlights on the very latest of his health:
While on his “Grilling JR” Podcast he goes into more detail, revealing he’s getting ready for brain surgery:
“I’m just battling, I’m battling. I’m getting ready to have another surgery, brain surgery this time, and that’s going to be an adventure, because I don’t think they’re going to find much, my brain.”
Ross then said he’ll be in the hospital for a couple of days:
“I’ll be in the hospital for two days. Hopefully nothing will go wrong. I got a great surgeon, and I went to a cardiologist today, heart doctor, obviously, and talked to about this upcoming procedure. He had to approve it, or they wouldn’t do it, so he did, and they’re going to do it soon.”
He talked about how it could happen within the next week, and how he’s coping with the symptoms:
“I just don’t have a confirmed date set, but it’s going to be the next week or so, I’m pushing for it. Hey, look, it’s just an illness. I gotta get it addressed. I couldn’t live my life the way it was, you know. I forget s*** and just couldn’t remember things. It’s just horrible. I felt horrible, but that all started with me passing out in my house and being discovered there, and we began an almost 40-day hospital stay.”
JR revealed that the surgery is to get fluid off of his brain. It’s serious, but also assured that he will heal up after a short hospital stay:
“This procedure that I’m getting ready to have done, I think it’s called a shunt. It’ll go from my brain. I don’t know where all it’s going to go, but it’s going someplace to get that fluid off my brain that’s making me not remember stuff. It’s fairly serious. I always thought that anytime they open your skull up, it’s a serious piece of business. This certainly feels that way. So, I’ll get it done, a short hospital stay and limp back home to heal up. That’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to heal up.”
